Quieting the Mind ~ Your Secret Self…

Remember that the worse case scenario probably won’t come to pass…

Racing thoughts—fast, repetitive thought patterns about a particular topic—are a common feature of anxiety and other mental-health disorders. But they can happen any time you are in an anxious or stressed state, even if you are not experiencing other symptoms.

Racing thoughts may be replays of past events which generated anxiety or sadness for you. They may also be worries about things that could happen in the future. They are strings of thoughts that are blown out of proportion, have a pattern, consume time, and often have no rational conclusion.

They can look like this:

“I always forget what I have to do. I’m so stupid. If I don’t remember everything, I’ll get fired. I don’t know what I’ll do if that happens. I should have taken that job I was offered six months ago. If I lose my job, I won’t have any money. I need to work longer hours to keep this job. That just makes me more depressed. I’m so miserable. What am I going to do?”

When thoughts like these flood your mind, they drain your energy, stop you from living in the present moment, and can create a loop in your brain that feels difficult to escape. They can also make it harder to concentrate and accomplish daily tasks, and impair your memory and sleep.

Having racing thoughts is often disturbing and frightening because it creates a sense of being out of control. But having racing thoughts does not mean you’re out of control or crazy. It does mean that you are anxious and that your stress level is higher than usual.

Here are some ways you can work to calm your mind and stop racing thoughts:

1. Use cognitive distancing.

Our mind usually worries about things it is convinced are true but, most of the time, are actually not true. You can balance your mind’s tendency to predict the worst outcome by coming up with positive alternative scenarios. For instance, your spouse seems distant and is sending out a lot of emails. You decide he must be having an affair. An alternative scenario: He is working extra hard on a project. Analyze what’s most likely to happen. Most of the time, the worst-case scenario your brain comes up with is not the most likely one.

2. Use a mantra.

A mantra is just a simple phrase or word that you repeat to calm your mind. Research has shown that repeating a mantra reduces activity in the part of your brain that is responsible for self-judgment and reflection. This is the part of the brain that spends so much time rehashing the past and worrying about the future. You can use any word, sound, or saying you want. You could try something like, “Om,” “Life is good,” or “Everything is OK.” Repeat your phrase over and over, focusing your thoughts only on your mantra. If your mind wanders, return to your mantra. You can practice this almost anytime, even going around the supermarket or on your commute home from work.

3. Focus on the present.

Returning your focus to the present will help you accept and let go of what you cannot control. It will also help you realize that you can’t change the past, and that the future hasn’t happened yet, so it’s a waste of time to keep thinking about them. (This doesn’t mean that you are unaware of what happened in the past or what is about to happen in the future.) Try taking a deep breath and asking yourself how you are feeling right now.

4. Write things down.

Putting your concerns on paper allows you to return to them later. You don’t have to dismiss them entirely, and you can feel comfortable knowing you will revisit the concern. Also, the act of writing engages your mind and reduces the power of racing thoughts. When thoughts are in your mind, they feel chaotic. Putting them on paper organizes them. Use a notebook or a designated computer document. Once you’ve taken a few minutes to organize your thoughts on paper or onscreen, your mind should be calmer. If you want, set aside a time limit for thinking about them before taking a break and coming back to them later.

5. Breathe.

This shifts the fight-or-flight response of your sympathetic nervous system to the relaxed response of the parasympathetic nervous system. Try counting to 3 as you breathe in and to 5 as you breathe out. Pay attention only to your breathing as you try to slow it down. Your mind will wander, but just bring it back to your breathing. It takes time to develop new habits. Whichever of these tools you use, it will take regular practice over a long period of time to see results. Unfortunately, many people expect the effects to be immediate and abandon the practice too soon. Instead, be consistent and patient.

Releasing Karmic Bonds ~ Forgiveness….

There is a profound teaching in what Jesus said in Luke 23:34 —  ”Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Truer words were never spoken. In forgiveness lies the stoppage of the wheel of action, also known as Karma. 

Releasin Karmic Bonds ~ Understandin Forgiveness....

Karma is a basic principle of several Eastern religions that refers to a person’s acts and their ethical or physical consequences. Although there are various schools of thought pertaining to the exact nature of karma, in Sanskrit the word basically means “action” or “deed.”

The law of karma is an ancient principle that teaches that every action has and equal and opposite reaction. In other words, every thought… word or deed is a “cause” that generates an “effect” at some level that we must each play out in this life or the next. It teaches that everything we’ve ever thought said or did, even in a past life, can cause effects in our present, past and or future lives.

My Childhood Dream and the Sheep effect….

For years of my childhood and even some instances once I became an adult, I’d have a very scary reoccurring dream of a boogey man/scary monster chasing me. In this dream I felt wholeheartedly that if it caught me before I made it back to my bed and put the covers over my head (pretending sleep) if it was able to snatch me up while I was running for my dear soul I would be devoured. Whatever horrible nightmare I could dream up would be my fate….so I ran and ran ….and as far as I can recall it never got me! I always made it back to my bed and put the covers over my head…being very careful to not touch the wall my bed was next to and keeping ever inch of my body under the covers. This I felt was extremely important.

Conquering Fear

Why did I continuously dream this dream almost every night? What does it mean?! Why was I experiencing this? This has been something I’ve pondered for years…. and only recently have I been able to see this for what it truly is. It’s part of the ole game of life. Now hold on, I know this sounds fracked up — but please continue reading, it will make sense in the end.

The great story ~ The Sheep Effect.

The sheep knows the wolf is circling the herd, they know there is a villain out there in the dark, ready to pounce… so they pretend not to look the wolf in the eye and by not doing this they would be safe … but then the fear becomes unbearable and the sheep looks and then bam… all becomes really bad for the sheep. It’s frozen in fear after looking the wolf in the eye and its consequently devoured.

So according to this “Hollywood” theme — if you look at evil, you get knocked out! End of story and yes…it is prevalent in many blockbuster movies and embedded in many myths.

You see the child on the bed with a flashlight and a cover over her head shivering with fear. She hears footsteps and breathing and peaks from under the covers and then bang — the child screams, the mother runs into the room to find a empty bed.

What’s the lesson?

If she had only stayed underneath the cover and not looked at the monster….she would be still alive!

Another example is in the Bible. Genesis 19 tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in Sodom with his family. Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom, when two angels came into town. Lot invited them to stay with his family. The following day, the angels made sure Lot, Edith and his two daughters left before God destroyed the city. As they fled, the angels warned them, “Do not look behind you or you will be swept away.” Edith was lagging behind, looked back and saw the flaming sulfur fall from the sky consuming everything and she became a pillar of salt. 

Same principle. (In my opinion)

The sheep effect tells us not to face our fear. Never look evil in the eye. Keep your head down and you will stay alive.

But — I see now, all that is false.

We must face our fears! Not continuing to run from them. This is paramount for true happiness and inner peace. You can turn around and look the monster/fear in the eye and still stay alive! I’m a true testament to this.

I had to decipher this for myself….it took years and maybe even lifetimes for me. I slowly began to see … past life trauma/karma as well as the many decades of being mind-controlled and brainwashed… from what I had been taught and the trash I’d watched on TV … all this encouraging…edging on this type of fear in my life. Once I grasped this it all opened up and I was slowly healed.

This was my lesson within the ole sheep effect.

Moral of the dream. Never turn your back on fear. Face your fear with love and grace, the results can dramatically change your life!

You are never too old to dream a new dream.

As in many dualistic realities — there is also hate and confusion. I choose to vibrate to the frequency of LOVE.
