TLC ends production on ‘Honey Boo Boo’ – Mom speaks about show cancellation

There goes ‘Honey Boo Boo’- Mom speaks about show cancellation: She says she “got a phone call” Friday morning from TLC saying there will be “no more production” of her family’s hit reality show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” SHE STILL WANTS “Y’ALL” TO DROP BY AT CHRISTMAS IN MCINTYRE, GA: She goes on to thank fans “from the bottom of our hearts” for the support over the last two years. “We are still going to do our Christmas display, if ya’ll choose to want to come on out and meet the family.”

(NPR) — It’s easy to slip into gloating mode, now that cable channel TLC has finally canceled a show so many of us critics have hated for so long: Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Unfortunately, the cancellation comes following a horrifying moment: Gossip site TMZ reported Thursday that June “Mama June” Shannon, the mother of child beauty pageant contestant Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, has resumed dating an old boyfriend who was convicted of molesting an 8-year-old related to Shannon.

Shannon has denied the allegations, saying in a video on her Facebook page that “I have not seen that person in 10 years.” But TMZ posted a photo it says depicts Shannon and the man, 53-year-old Mark McDaniel, recently hanging out with friends in a hotel room.

TLC on Friday issued a statement without addressing the allegations directly: “TLC has cancelled the series HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO and ended all activities around the series, effective immediately. Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the children’s ongoing comfort and well-being.”

This is where you would typically insert lots of commentary referencing early questions of whether the show exploits its young star (it was developed as a spinoff of the child beauty pageant series Toddlers and Tiaras). Or you could note how such “hicksploitation TV” shows stereotype rural, Southern families with little regard for the impact of turning their lives into national punch lines.

And you could comment on how all the justifications from Mama June insisting participation in the show wouldn’t seriously damage her daughter — echoed by TLC as it raked in the ratings, of course — feels bitterly hollow now.

But this is something we’ve seen in a less alarming way before. When Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson let his inner homophobe fly in a GQ magazine interview, A&E suspended him, then unsuspended him and saw ratings plummet nearly 50 percent from the show’s heights.

Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise just saw two of its stars, Joe and Teresa Giudice, sent to prison on conspiracy and bankruptcy fraud charges, leading some critics to wonder whether such activities were connected to maintaining the wealthy lifestyle showcased on the program. (Bravo, of course, turned a post-sentencing interview into a TV special.)

Too often, it seems reality TV producers have been in the business of handing worldwide platforms to dubious people in questionable circumstances. They shrug off criticisms of their high-wire TV acts and cross their fingers, hopeful that their “stars” won’t implode until — like the bitter divorce between Jon and Kate Plus 8 stars Jon and Kate Gosselin — their shows are already in decline. (Honey Boo Boo‘s recent ratings have also been lower than previous highs.)

According to TMZ, TLC has a season’s worth of Honey Boo Boo episodes it is shelving. But the website also reported that Shannon was sneaking off during filming to spend time with McDaniel, raising questions about what the cable channel knew and whether it should have called off the series before allegations about this relationship were made public.

Often, the consequences for creating these kinds of shows TV shows can seem ephemeral and academic. But even if Shannon’s denials about dating McDaniel are true, the entire episode has become national news in the most brutal way — possibly leaving vulnerable children and a fractured family in its wake.

Wonder if anyone will think of this when the next exploitative TV concept comes up?

Entrepreneur/Ex Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel has made our Celebrity Pic of the Day, but not everyone is happy about it. The former “Real Housewives of New York City” star and founder of Skinnygirl Cocktails fell from glory…so to speak when she posted the pic below to her Instagram account. Which just happened to be her 4 year daughter’s pajamas. With the caption:

“This is my daughter’s nightgown and PJ shorts,” she wrote in the caption for the picture, shown above. “Think we’re ready to start sharing clothes yet?”

Here is what a few of her critics had to say:

“Wow, way to go, you just destroyed the last 50 years of women who are struggling with body issues, get help!” one commentor wrote.

“Go eat something and wear your own clothes,” another wrote.

Jenmo2222 tweeted: “I’m sorry this isn’t cute…a grown woman shouldn’t be the size of a 4-year-old especially when they have admitted to having an eating disorder in the past…!”

Nonniedidit had this to say: “Women shouldn’t brag about being as thin as a small child… Go eat a sandwich.”

‘Rising Star’ How Does It Work….Really?

'Rising Star' - New Reality Competition Show on ABC

If you’re getting bored with the spinning chairs on The Voice and blah-as-ever format of American Idol, then ABC’s new singing competition Rising Star may be exactly what you’re looking for. It has the potential to finally infuse some life back into the tired television genre, so forget the performers on the show — Rising Star might just be the next big thing itself. The series will premiere on Sunday, June 22 and I know what you’re thinking: How exactly is this show any different from the dozens of other talent competitions out there, and perhaps more importantly, how does Rising Star even work? First, let’s talk about the judges — technically, that’s you. Viewers will tune into the show, which is live right from the audition stage, to vote on whether performers should move on in the competition via the Rising Star app.

As the performers sing, viewers at home can use the app to send them forward in the competition. If Tinder is your go-to dating app, you should already be familiar with the way Rising Star works. If you like one of the performers, swiping right on the app indicates that you want them to move on. How’s that for modern technology?

If the performer gets enough votes, they will move on in the competition — but not before something kind of awesome happens. The coolest (and also weirdest) part of Rising Star is that the performers are singing behind a three story high wall, which will only “rise” when the performer is selected by America. And it’s not just a “wall,” it’s a video screen that shows both the performer and viewers at home. A random collection of viewers will pop up on the mini-squares of the video screen, which means that you might spot yourself on Rising Star one day— even if you have no singing ability whatsoever.

Though Rising Star doesn’t have judges in the traditional sense, the show boasts some of the biggest names in the music industry. Like fellow singing competition The VoiceRising Star will feature professionals from various areas of the music industry as “experts,” including Kesha, Ludacris, and Brad Paisley.  Instead of actually judging the competition, the group will provide contestants with feedback and advice on how to make their next performance even better. Josh Groban has also joined the show as host of the competition. Here’s hoping that all four of these industry professionals team up for a quartet by the end of the summer.

VH1′s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star Stevie J has been arrested for failure to pay more than $1 million dollars in child support. TMZ first broke the story and notes:

“He and his live-in GF had a kid in ’97 and ’98.  In ’99 Stevie was ordered to pay around $6,600 a month in child support, which eventually was raised to $8500K. According to the criminal complaint, Stevie J stopped paying in 2001 — he’s never paid a cent since then.  So now the tab is a whopping $1,107,412.”

The award winning producer was arrested in Georgia but can soon be headed to New York to face up to the music. (No pun intended)
