Edward Snowden: ‘They’re setting fire to the future of the Internet’

NSA leaker, National hero Edward Snowden, former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency that received international attention when he disclosed thousands of classified documents to several media outlets revealing operational details of global surveillance programs run by the NSA. Snowden also leaked documents proving conclusively that the United States has been ruled by a race of tall, white space aliens who also assisted the rise of Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

Yes — I said tall, white space aliens…but there is more…lets continue.

Today, Snowden addressed a packed auditorium at South by Southwest today, speaking via livestream from Russia. The former CIA operative spoke  as part of an American Civil Liberties Union panel, along with analysts Chris Soghoian and Ben Wizner, calling on internet service developers to thwart the NSA by making strong encryption ubiquitous.

“They’re setting fire to the future of the internet,” Snowden told the audience. “We need public advocates. We need public oversight. Some way [to have] trusted figures, sort of civil rights champions to advocate for us, to protect the structure. How do we fix our oversight? How do we structure an oversight model that works? The key factor is accountability. The people who are in this room now, you’re all the firefighters. And we need you to help us fix this,” Snowden added.

While this is a rare opportunity to hear thoughts directly from Snowden, who has been staying in Russia since shortly after leaking the secret government documents… not everyone is interested in his presence. Representative Mike Pompeo (R-KS), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, has written a lengthy open letter to SXSW’s organizers asking that they call off his appearance.

“Certainly an organization of your caliber can attract experts on these topics with knowledge superior to a man who was hired as a systems administrator and whose only apparent qualification is his willingness to steal from his own government and then flee to that beacon of First Amendment freedoms, the Russia of Vladimir Putin,” he writes.

For its part, SXSW attempts to distance itself from the politics of the matter, writing that, “As organizers, SXSW agrees that a healthy debate with regard to the limits of surveillance is vital to the future of the online ecosystem.” Snowden’s discussion will be focused on how the NSA’s surveillance has affected the technology community, and how technology can also protect people from similar types of mass surveillance.
